What does Auto CPAP mean?

Auto CPAP provides the minimum amount of pressure required to keep the airway open. Auto CPAP will always provide a pressure of air. Auto CPAP machines will monitor your breathing to increase and decrease as you need between the parameters set in the machine.

For example, most patients are set to pressure ranging from 4cmH2O to 20cmH2O. This means when a patient starts using auto CPAP at night, they will start at a pressure 4cmH2O. As they fall asleep the airway will collapse and the machine will automatically increase to 7cmH2O (pressures are used for illustrative purposes only) to keep their airways open. As the night goes on the patient may turn on their back and/or enter REM sleep. The pressure demands will increase, and the auto CPAP machine will automatically increase to 14cmH2O(pressures are used for illustrative purposes only) to maintain the airway opening. Once the back sleeping or REM sleep stops the demands on the airway will decrease, and the auto CPAP machine will reduce in pressure back to 7cmH2O.

CPAP machines(non auto) are fixed machines and only provided one fixed pressure. For example this means if set 10cmH2O, it will stay at 10cmH2O and not adjust.
